Common questions
Can a quantity surveyor really work remotely?
The measurable work can, and that's most of it. Takeoffs from drawings, cost plans, bills of quantities, procurement schedules, subcontractor comparisons, valuations and CVR updates all happen on a screen. Site measures and face-to-face client meetings don't — but those are a small fraction of a QS's week.
What software do they use?
Whatever you already use. Bluebeam, PlanSwift, Cubit, Causeway, Excel — your licences, your permissions, accessed remotely. Tell us your stack on the call and we'll brief the provider to match it.
How much does a remote quantity surveyor cost?
From around £11 an hour, which is roughly £1,900 a month full-time. A UK QS typically costs £45,000–£60,000 plus National Insurance, pension, a car allowance and a desk — often £70,000 or more all in.
We're a small contractor. Is this worth it for us?
It's usually most worth it for small contractors. If you're turning over £2–5m you probably can't justify a full-time UK QS, so a director does the takeoffs at the weekend — slower, later, and at the highest hourly cost in the business. A remote QS costs a fraction of the UK figure and frees up your most expensive person.
